K-1 was founded in 1993 by Kazuyoshi Ishii as a hybrid striking martial arts promotion combining Karate, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Taekwondo, and later, Boxing under modified rules. The “K” stands for karate, kickboxing, kung fu, and kempo, while “1” means “the best.” The is the promotion’s annual heavyweight tournament — one of the most prestigious titles in stand-up fighting.
