While O2Jam files were the main draw, version 1.4.2 solidified support for the BMS format. BMS (Be-Music Source) is a file format originating from the Beatmania simulator scene. By supporting this, O2mania 1.4.2 became a universal player. It allowed players to experience the vast library of BMS doujin music that was flooding the internet in the late 2000s, but with the familiar interface and key-binding of O2Jam.
O2mania filled this void. It was a standalone client that allowed players to load .ojn (O2Jam Note) and .bms (Beatmania Simulator) files directly from their hard drives. It transformed the game from a service into a tool, allowing for unlimited customization, high-score tracking without lag, and the ability to play "private server" files locally.
