During the 14th century, the Montserrat monastery was a major pilgrimage site. Pilgrims often spent the night in the church, and the monks noticed that they frequently sang secular, sometimes inappropriate, songs. To redirect this energy toward piety, the monks compiled the Llibre Vermell . As the manuscript itself states, it was intended for pilgrims who "sometimes desire to sing and dance" so that they might do so in a way that was "pious and devout." Most of these songs feature instructions for dancing, such as "ad trepodium" (for a triple-step dance) or "ad rotundellum" (for a round dance).
Medieval pilgrimages were long, exhausting, and sometimes dangerous. At night, pilgrims rested in the monastery square, where they would sing and dance. The monks worried that these activities might become "lascivious or dishonest." So, they compiled a set of cantilenae (little songs) that were both engaging and pious.
