The media plays a significant role in shaping public perceptions and representations of various demographics. This includes, but is not limited to, age, gender, ethnicity, and physical attributes. The way certain groups are portrayed can influence societal attitudes and norms. This paper aims to explore the representation of a specific demographic in media, focusing on how such portrayals can affect public perception.

The industry standard was brutal: male leads could age into their 60s while romancing co-stars 30 years their junior. Meanwhile, mature women were relegated to horror films (where their aging face was the monster) or melodramas where their sole purpose was to die tragically to motivate the younger protagonist.

Despite the progress, the fight is not over. The representation of mature women in cinema is still skewed heavily toward white, thin, wealthy archetypes. The industry has a long way to go in representing the vast spectrum of aging bodies, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
