Mulan 2 asks a tougher question: What do you do when your personal happiness (marrying Shang) conflicts with your duty to your country (ensuring the treaty)? Mulan looks into the princesses’ eyes and sees herself—a woman being sold as property for political gain. Her decision to sabotage the mission is morally grey but consistent with her character.
