The most immediate conflict arises between the homeowner and the neighborhood. While you have a right to record on your property, you do not have a right to record your neighbors’ private lives. A camera pointed at a public sidewalk or a neighbor’s front door creates a "surveillance state" on a micro level.

As you build your home security system, remember that privacy is not the enemy of security. They are two sides of the same coin. A neighborhood that is heavily surveilled but distrustful is not safe. A neighborhood that respects boundaries and uses technology with restraint is truly secure.
