Despite the obstacles, the desire for this mod is immense. Clans already run elaborate “GM’d” campaigns using spreadsheets and Discord dice bots. They play Red Dragon as the tactical resolver for a whole pen-and-paper wargame. A proper mod would automate that drudgery and bring it into the light.

For years, players asked Eugen Systems, the developers, to implement co-op or multiplayer campaigns. The answer was always the same: the engine architecture made it impossible. The game was code-locked to a single player experience in the campaign mode.

While a seamless, built-in multiplayer campaign mod does not exist in a single click-and-play format, several major projects have addressed this gap: Ash and Shadows
