The film follows the crew of the whaling ship Essex in 1820. Sailing from Nantucket, Massachusetts, the ship is attacked by an 85-foot bull sperm whale. While the whale’s attack is terrifying, the true horror begins afterward. The crew, including First Mate Owen Chase (Hemsworth) and Captain George Pollard (Benjamin Walker), must sail thousands of miles across the Pacific in small whaling boats with limited food and water.
