A "Direct Play" release was a pirated version that stripped away the unnecessary fat. "Ripped" by groups, these versions often had the cinematic cutscenes removed (to save space) and the music compressed. The defining feature, however, was that the game was pre-installed. You didn't run an installer. You simply downloaded the folder, perhaps clicked a "setup.reg" file to add keys to the Windows Registry, and double-clicked the executable. It just worked.
