In the early 20th century, a Japanese judoka named Mitsuyo Maeda traveled to Brazil and introduced Jujutsu to the Gracie family. The Gracies, particularly Helio and Carlos, adapted and modified the techniques to create a new style of martial art that emphasized ground fighting and submission holds. This new style became known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) or Jiu Jitsu Complete.
