Born Henry McCarty (later known as William H. Bonney) in New York City’s Irish slums, Billy’s life was one of early abandonment. By his teens, he was drifting through the New Mexico Territory. Small in stature (barely 5’7"), with a boyish face and prominent front teeth, he didn’t look the part of a killer.
