Chanakya (played by Tarun Khanna), a learned Brahmin from Takshashila, arrives in Pataliputra (the capital of Magadh). He is humiliated by Dhana Nanda in the royal court when he tries to advise the king on defending India from Alexander’s potential invasion. Nanda calls him a "pretender" and orders him thrown out. Chanakya, enraged, removes his sacred thread ( janeu ) and swears an oath: "I will uproot the Nanda dynasty and install a true ruler." He escapes the city and begins searching for a worthy student—a future emperor.
Parallel to Chandragupta’s story, we meet Princess Nandini. She is portrayed as Dhanananda’s proud and fiery daughter. In Episode 1, Nandini is seen learning sword-fighting, defying the traditional norms of a princess. She witnesses her father’s tyranny and feels conflicted. However, her loyalty to her family blinds her initially. The chemistry between the characters is established when Nandini unknowingly crosses paths with young Chandragupta at a marketplace—a classic dramatic irony where the audience knows they are destined to be enemies (and lovers), but the characters do not.
