In many Afro-Brazilian religions, the hour before dawn is known as the Hora da Madrugada —a time when the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds is thinnest. It is the time for the Preto Velho (Old Black slave entities) to work, for they are humble and slow, moving with the patience of the darkness. Rituals performed antes do amanhecer are considered more potent because the mind is not yet polluted by the noise of the city.

Reymond strips away his usual matinee idol charm. His Ciro is a man eroded by regret. He has a limp that worsens in the cold, a hacking cough from years of cheap cigarettes, and a moral compass that is broken but still points north.
