( Kimi no Na wa. ) and the critical acclaim of Weathering With You , Makoto Shinkai was a solo animator working from his computer in a small Tokyo apartment. In 2004, he released his first full-length feature film: ( Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho – literally "Beyond the Clouds, the Promised Place").

The film is set in an alternate history of Japan, where the country is divided into two rival nations: the Republic of Atsumono and the Eastern Bloc. The story follows two childhood friends, Sora Amamiya and Shiro Kiryu, who are reunited after a long time apart. Sora is a young woman with a passion for astronomy, while Shiro is a brilliant engineer. They team up with a mysterious girl named Maki to build a giant tower that can see the other side of the world.
