The film begins with Carol, a free-spirited young woman, who quits her job as a journalist in Chicago and decides to travel to a remote farm in Colorado. There, she meets a handsome and charming cowboy named Deacon (played by Crudup), who becomes her love interest. As Carol tries to adjust to her new life on the farm, she also tries to help Deacon with his farm work and gets involved in the local community.
