Set in 1952, the film opens with a harrowing sequence: two nuns living at the Cârța Monastery in Romania are attacked by an unseen force while searching for an ancient relic. One survives long enough to take her own life rather than be possessed, her body discovered the next morning by a local villager, Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet).
