How did Blizzard achieve these visuals on the hardware of the early 2000s (think Pentium III processors and 32MB graphics cards)?

Early in Reign of Chaos , we see the turning point. Arthas murders his own father, King Terenas, with Frostmourne. The cutscene is brutal for its time. The crown rolls across the marble floor as the King’s blood pools.

(often pre-rendered or quickly skippable). WC3’s scenes weren’t filler—they were the reward for surviving a mission, the emotional payoff that turned orc and human players into Warcraft fans.
