Blue is everywhere: Emma’s hair, Adèle’s dress, the sea, the sky, the café chairs. Blue represents freedom, desire, and ultimately, melancholy. The final sequence — Adèle wearing a blue dress to Emma’s exhibition, only to leave alone — is devastating precisely because the color no longer belongs to her.
The film is a sweeping coming-of-age chronicle that follows Adèle (Exarchopoulos), a 15-year-old high school student who is beginning to explore her identity. Her world changes when she meets Emma (Seydoux), a free-spirited art student with short blue hair.
