After a morning of classes, the school girl might participate in extracurricular activities, such as sports, music, or clubs. Jamaica has a strong sporting culture, and many schools offer sports like track and field, soccer, basketball, and cricket. Our school girl might be part of the school's netball or soccer team, developing her skills and teamwork spirit.

On weekends, the school girl drags her friends to "Fish Fry" spots like Hellshire Beach (St. Catherine) or Port Royal. Here, the entertainment is the food—roasting fish and festival (sweet fried dough) while listening to a live DJ. It is a "cheapeskate" date or a friend’s birthday celebration. The lifestyle is incomplete without the ritual of "washing it down" with a "Box Juice" (Ting, Kola Champagne, or a Supligen).

When you picture a school girl in Jamaica, the first thing that might come to mind is the uniform. And yes, it’s iconic. Crisp white shirts, pleated skirts (usually in bottle green, navy, or maroon), and those argyle socks. But to reduce the experience to just the uniform would be to miss the rhythm entirely.
