To understand the magnitude of Chapter 516, we must first recap the chaos immediately preceding it. The (Chapters 355–438 in the original run, extending through volume 51) is not your typical guild battle. The Dark Guild Tartaros, an elite group of Etherious demons created by the dark wizard Zeref, is unique because they are not a standard magical guild. They are a terrorist organization operating from a mobile cube called Pluto’s Grimoire.

Even years after serialization (the manga ended in 2017 with Chapter 545), the Tartaros conclusion remains a high-water mark for Hiro Mashima’s storytelling. It balances the series’ trademark “power of friendship” with genuine loss and consequence.
