Shantae 64 – Latest
The original Shantae was released on the Game Boy Color in 2002, late in the handheld's life cycle. But before that cult classic even hit shelves, WayForward was already looking toward the future. They had successfully pitched a Shantae title for the Game Boy Color, but they were also aggressively pursuing a home console release. Initially, this project was not aimed at the Nintendo 64. It began its life as a project for the PlayStation and the PC. However, as the "console wars" raged, WayForward saw an opportunity with Nintendo’s powerful new cartridge-based system.
This demo featured a 3D model of Shantae that sparked debate among fans for years. Notably, she had shorter hair and a more "wooden" expression compared to her lively 2D sprites. shantae 64
The Nintendo 64 was infamous for its blurry textures and low-poly models. WayForward’s concept art, however, showed a cel-shaded aesthetic reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker , but three years before that game existed. Since the N64 couldn’t handle true cel-shading, developers planned to use clever texture mapping to make Shantae’s sprite-like charm pop in a 3D space. The original Shantae was released on the Game
Eagle-eyed fans noticed that the final dungeon in Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse —the "Pirate Master’s Lair"—features architectural geometry that looks distinctly polygonal and blocky, intentionally evoking the look of a low-poly N64 game. Lead designer Matt Bozon confirmed in a 2015 interview that this was a "wink and a nod" to the Shantae 64 build. Initially, this project was not aimed at the Nintendo 64
The fascination with "Shantae 64" and other unreleased demos speaks to the passion of the community. In an era where game preservation is vital, seeing a "lost" GBA game like Risky Revolution finally hit the Nintendo eShop or Limited Run Games is a win for everyone.
For now, the half-genie remains in 2D. And perhaps that is where she belongs. But every time the camera pans out in Seven Sirens , or when you see a blocky, stone pillar in Pirate’s Curse , remember: you are looking at a ghost. You are looking at the shadow of Shantae 64 .
