When we think of popular entertainment studios, our minds often drift to the historic lots of Hollywood. These "Legacy Studios" laid the foundation for the modern blockbuster model, and despite the upheaval of the digital age, they remain the heavy hitters of production.

While Disney handles Western animation, Studio Ghibli is the arthouse of the cartoon world. Produced by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, Ghibli films do not follow the "villain/victory" structure of Hollywood. They are meditative, melancholic, and hand-drawn. Spirited Away remains the only hand-drawn, non-English language film to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Their productions prioritize watercolor backgrounds and emotional silence over slapstick, proving that "popular" does not mean "loud."
