This paper investigates the ambiguous textual tradition of Syumusul Anwar , a PDF widely attributed as a classical Jawi (Arabic-Malay) text on Sunni theology. Through digital ethnography of pesantren Telegram channels and archive analysis, it finds that no canonical Syumusul Anwar exists in major Islamic manuscript libraries. Instead, the PDF is a hybrid text—part Sanusiyyah commentary, part local battaliyah (mnemonic verses). The paper argues that the PDF functions as a "floating signifier" of authority: its very obscurity allows modern kiai to claim lineage to a lost kitab , while students treat the PDF as authentic due to its visual age (simulated wear on scanned pages). This case study reveals how digital reproduction creates new forms of sanad (chains of transmission) in post-traditional Islam.
