This confession shatters Bill’s world. His smug, upper-class ego is eviscerated. To reclaim his sense of agency and to flirt with the danger Alice described, he embarks on a nocturnal odyssey through New York City. This journey leads him to borrow a costume and password to infiltrate a secret orgy—the now-iconic "Somerton" mansion sequence. What he witnesses there is a ritualistic, terrifying display of power, wealth, and anonymous sex, but the line between reality and dream quickly dissolves.
Kubrick argues that Bill and Alice are two sides of the same coin. Bill believes he is a rational man of science, but his actions are driven by irrational, primal jealousy. Alice, on the other hand, admits her dark desires openly. The film’s famous final line—"Fuck," followed by "There is something very important we need to do as soon as possible... Fuck"—is often misread as cheap. In fact, it is the thesis. After a night of chasing the abstract, dangerous idea of unfaithfulness, Bill realizes the only real, meaningful connection available to him is the messy, vulnerable, ordinary intimacy with his wife.
