When 4x4 originally aired on June 27, 2016, it received positive reviews for tackling teen dating abuse head-on. TV Guide praised the episode for “never sensationalizing Nick’s mental health issues while still making it clear that Mariana is not responsible for fixing him.” However, some critics noted that the Brandon/Courtney subplot felt rushed compared to the intensity of the Nick/Mariana scenes.
