In traditional Malay society, a janda (widow or divorcee) occupied a liminal space. She was neither a maiden (perawan/dara) nor a married woman (beristeri). Historically, widows were pitied and protected. However, as divorce rates rose in modern Malaysia (with statistics showing nearly half of all divorces occur within the first five years of marriage), the janda became a common figure in kampung gossip and urban legends.
