At the time, this was controversial. Power users were frustrated that their memorized shortcuts and menu locations were gone. However, Microsoft’s gamble paid off. By grouping related features together in visual tabs, the Ribbon made advanced features in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint discoverable for the average user. Today, the Ribbon is the industry standard, utilized not just by Microsoft, but by competitors and design software across the globe.
