The first film was about the psychological damage of ethnic violence. A theoretical Dil Se 3 could complete a thematic trilogy with Dil Se... (1998) as Part 1 (Northeast insurgency), a theoretical Dil Se 2 set during the Kashmir militancy (early 2000s), and Dil Se 3 set against contemporary Naxalite movements in Central India. Each film would pair a non-local hero with a local woman radicalized by state violence.
