Software developers rely on dongles to protect decades of R&D. Using an emulator to avoid paying for a license is theft of intellectual property. Conversely, a vendor who refuses to replace a broken dongle for a current license holder is engaging in poor business practice.
Developed primarily by (now part of Thales/Gemalto ), HASP dongles are small USB or parallel port devices that act as a hardware "lock". When you launch a protected application, it queries the dongle for a specific security code or encryption key. If the dongle is missing or the response is incorrect, the software will either limit its functionality or refuse to start entirely.
