The Script Extender (SKSE) is a program that allows mods to do things Bethesda never intended (SkyUI, RaceMenu, Engine Fixes). Every time Skyrim's .exe file changes, SKSE breaks.

Most standard mods (.esp/.esm files) remained unaffected.

Expect Bethesda to release one more minor patch to 1.6.x before they fully shift resources to The Elder Scrolls VI . For the next two years, 1.6.640 will be the standard for Skyrim modding.

The community now standardizes on launching Skyrim exclusively via SKSE loader (skse64_loader.exe), which bypasses Steam’s update trigger.
