The production involved over 20,000 people, including thousands of indigenous non-professional actors who had to undergo rigorous training to portray their ancestors. The attention to detail in the costumes, the traditional facial tattoos (which were applied daily with makeup taking hours), and the dialect spoken (Seediq language with Japanese and Mandarin subtitles) creates an immersive atmosphere that is rare in modern cinema.
The film centers on the real-life Seediq warrior Mouna Rudo (played by Umin Boya). In 1930, after decades of brutal oppression—including forced labor, cultural erasure, and public humiliation—Mouna Rudo led a coordinated attack on a Japanese school sports day, killing over 130 Japanese. In response, the Japanese military launched a counterattack using poison gas and heavy artillery, forcing the Seediq to commit mass suicide rather than surrender.
