Hachiko was a Japanese Akita dog born in 1923 in Ōdate, Akita Prefecture, Japan. He was purchased by Professor Ueno Hidesaburō, a Japanese agricultural scientist, who took Hachiko to live with him in Tokyo. Every day, Hachiko would accompany Professor Ueno to Shibuya Station, where the professor would board a train to work. Hachiko would then wait for his owner's return at the station, often lying by the statue of a loyal dog that stood outside the station.
