The "con Comics 25" project launched in late 2022. The "25" is symbolic—representing the 25 frames per second of traditional film and the 25 millimeters of a vintage camera lens. It represents the space between motion and stillness. Tonkato began deconstructing vintage American comics (Silver Age Spider-Man, obscure EC Horror comics) and Japanese gekiga, reassembling them into massive, hand-painted canvases that look like frozen cinematic panels. Tonkato’s journey is one of radical transformation. Beginning as a traditional painter rooted in classical oils and acrylics, the artist eventually sought the expressive freedom found in comic books.
