The original 35mm camera negative, which had been stored in proper archival conditions, was scanned in 4K resolution (4096 x 3112 pixels). However, a simple scan isn't enough. Koyaanisqatsi presents unique challenges: It contains a mix of 35mm anamorphic footage, 16mm footage, and even stock footage from NASA. The restoration team meticulously cleaned every frame of dirt, scratches, and warping using manual and automated tools.
