At its heart, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (The Toilet: A Love Story) is a satirical romantic comedy that tackles a subject often considered taboo in Indian society: open defecation. The narrative is inspired by true events, drawing loosely from the story of Anita Narre, a woman who refused to defecate in the open and demanded a toilet in her marital home.
The story follows Keshav (Akshay Kumar), a man from a conservative village near Mathura, who falls in love with and marries Jaya (Bhumi Pednekar), an educated woman. Conflict arises on their first day of marriage when Jaya discovers Keshav's home lacks a toilet. Refusing to participate in the village's tradition of open defecation, she leaves him, vowing not to return until a toilet is built. Keshav must then battle age-old superstitions, his orthodox father, and corrupt government bureaucracy to win back his wife and bring sanitation to his village.
