: There is a mystery here. Although Ngoalong Lau’s death is officially recorded as April 17, 1943 (tuberculosis), his tomb was built in 1936, seven years before his death. Inside, the tomb is empty. Some scholars believe Lau faked his death and fled to Dali, Yunnan. Others believe the tomb is actually a freestanding sculpture: a house for a ghost who was never born. The inscription reads only: "Je ne me souviens pas de la fin" (I do not remember the end).
