During the 1980s and 1990s, Bangladesh faced a massive challenge: millions of rural adults, particularly women, had never attended school. PROSHIKA ran thousands of "Ganokendra" (People’s Centers) that offered three-month basic literacy courses.

Technically, the original (often referred to as Proshika Unicode or Proshika Non-Unicode ) is a serif-style Bangla font designed for high legibility in long-form text. It was widely distributed in the late 1990s and early 2000s as part of the pre-Unicode era of Bangla computing.
