The most controversial aspect of the 2006 movie was Marchiano’s portrayal. While Gibson’s Jesus (Jim Caviezel) was stoic, weary, and heroic in a tragic sense, Marchiano’s Jesus smiles. He smiles on the road to Calvary. He smiles at the Romans. He laughs despite the nails. Marchiano argues that this is theologically accurate: "No one takes my life from me, but I lay it down of my own accord" (John 10:18).
