At its core, is a multi-level English course for adult learners published by Oxford University Press. It is the North American version of the wildly successful English File series (which originally used British English). The series takes learners from absolute beginner (Starter) to advanced (Level 5), covering the full spectrum of CEFR levels (A1-C1).

In the modern era, a textbook cannot just be a book. American English File excels in its digital integration.

For teachers, it is a dream. The lesson plans are intuitive. You rarely have to create materials from scratch because the "Communicative Activities" at the back of the book provide games and role plays that get students out of their seats.

The authors—Clive Oxenden, Christina Latham-Koenig, and later Paul Seligson—understood a fundamental truth about language learning:

Because it is published by Oxford, the books are not cheap. Expect to pay between $30-$50 per level for the Student Book with Online Practice. However, given the quality of the binding, audio production, and content longevity, it is an investment in fluency.
