The creators played a coy game. Regardless of labels, the love between the two leads is undeniable and serves as the driving force of the plot. Chisato fights for "world peace," but she specifically fights to keep her café, her routine, and Takina safe.

At first glance, the world of Lycoris Recoil appears to be a utopian version of modern Japan. Crime rates are near zero, and the streets are safe. However, this peace is manufactured. It is maintained by the Direct Attack (DA) organization, an extrajudicial entity that employs orphaned girls as assassins and spies. These agents, known as "Lycoris," eliminate threats before the public is even aware of them. The population remains blissfully ignorant, believing that Japan has simply evolved past violence.

Their dynamic is a masterclass in "opposites attract." Chisato teaches Takina how to live; Takina teaches Chisato how to value her own life enough to fight for it.
