Unlike many Brazilian cities that grew haphazardly around ports or mining settlements, was born from a deliberate political and architectural vision. Until the 1930s, the state of Goiás was governed from the colonial city of Vila Boa (now Goiás Velho), isolated in the mountainous west. Intending to modernize the state and bring the government closer to the economic centers of the southeast, then-Governor Pedro Ludovico Teixeira orchestrated the transfer of the capital.
