Legend has it that Madhav Patnaik was a devout worshipper of Maa Durga. However, he was afflicted with a severe skin disease (leprosy). Shunned by society, he took refuge in a quiet temple of Maa Durga at (near Balasore) or some accounts state near Puri . Through intense penance, he composed this 34-verse prayer. As he completed each letter with pure devotion, his body began to heal miraculously. By the time he reached the final letter 'Ksha', he was fully cured. The Goddess declared that anyone who recites this Chautisa with a pure heart would be freed from all physical and spiritual ailments.
