The film opens with a corpse in a pool of blood. Two strangers, Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) and photographer Adam Stanheight (Leigh Whannell), wake up in a grimy, abandoned industrial bathroom, each chained by the ankle to a rusted pipe. Between them lies a dead man holding a tape recorder and a revolver. This twist re-contextualizes the entire film
