The narrative follows Barnum (played with manic charisma by Hugh Jackman) from his impoverished childhood—where he falls in love with the privileged Charity Hallett (Michelle Williams)—to the creation of his bizarre museum that evolves into the “Greatest Show on Earth.”

The movie operates in the same space as a fairy tale. Viewers don't watch Cinderella for a treatise on step-parental inheritance laws. They watch it for the slipper and the ball. Plans for a sequel have been mired in development hell. In 2023, producer Chernin suggested a follow-up is "inevitable," but Hugh Jackman has stated he would only return if the script honors the original's spirit—a live stage musical adaptation is currently being fast-tracked by Disney (which now owns the 20th Century Fox catalog).
