Why the change? Director Justin Copeland and producer James Krieg argued that making Riddler the mastermind brought the mystery full circle. In their view, a villain who defines himself by intellect deserved a win, and the “childhood friend” trope had been done before (e.g., Batman Begins ’s Ducard/Ra’s al Ghul). While critics of the change call it a betrayal of the source material (robbing the story of its personal tragedy), defenders argue it makes The Riddler a credible, terrifying threat for the first time in animated history.
The film’s emotional core, much like the comic, is the rekindled romance between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle (Catwoman, voiced by Jennifer Morrison). Their relationship is the heart of the film. Unlike the brooding loner we often see, presents a Batman willing to consider happiness. The rooftop banter between Morrison’s sly, morally grey Catwoman and O’Mara’s stoic Batman is a highlight, giving the violence a romantic gravity. batman.hush.2019
However, the ghost of Jim Lee’s art haunts the film. Lee’s original Hush is considered one of the most beautifully drawn Batman comics ever—dynamic, detailed, and cinematic. The 2019 film does not attempt to replicate that style. Instead, it opts for a consistent, functional house style. This works for action scenes (the fight with Killer Croc in the sewers is fluid and brutal) but fails to capture the iconic splash pages of the comic, such as the graveyard fight where Superman is controlled by Ivy. For purists, this lack of visual homage felt like a missed opportunity. Why the change
