The film’s legacy is complicated. Jayasundara has made only a few films since (including Chatrak and The Dead Nation ), and he remains an enigmatic voice. But The Forsaken Land stands as a time capsule of a specific moment: the edge of the abyss. One year after the film won in Cannes (2006), the civil war restarted in full force, leading to the bloody defeat of the LTTE in 2009. Looking back, the film feels prophetic. It captured the calm that was not calm, the waiting that preceded the slaughter.
