The initial lineup of the Z Sharp Big Band consisted of talented musicians from the local jazz scene, all of whom shared Z Sharp's vision for creating a unique sound that would pay homage to the classic big bands while also showcasing their own originality. "We wanted a name that was technically impossible," recalled original trombonist Mike Vallone in a rare 2004 interview. "Big bands are often criticized for being predictable, for playing the same Basie charts and Ellington standards. Z Sharp is the note that shouldn't exist. Like many great creative institutions, the Z Sharp Big Band burned bright and fast. By 2006, the financial reality of transporting 19 musicians, double drums, and a grand piano became unsustainable. The departure of Helena Vonn to a scoring career in Los Angeles effectively ended the band's active touring life.
