Sarafina- -1992-

As the students prepare for a school concert, the political temperature rises. Sarafina’s mother (Miriam Makeba, the iconic "Mama Africa") works as a domestic servant for a white family, bringing home the quiet humiliation of a passbook and a master-servant relationship. When the students decide to join the national protests against Afrikaans, the film pivots violently from high-energy musical numbers to high-stakes tragedy.

The soundtrack was composed and produced by Mbongeni Ngema, the creator of the original stage musical Sarafina! (which premiered on Broadway in 1988). The songs blend traditional South African rhythms, mbaqanga, gospel, and protest anthems. Unlike Hollywood musicals, the singing in Sarafina! arises organically from the characters’ emotions—defiance, grief, joy, and communal strength. Sarafina- -1992-
