She made her film debut in 2009 with a small role in the comedy-drama "Flying Rabbits." Her breakthrough film role came in 2012 with the romantic comedy "Love My Life," which premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
Her work on the 2016 film A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi) cemented her status. She was brought in specifically to solve a visual puzzle: How do you depict social anxiety through water reflections? Ishihara spent three weeks photographing the Katsura River at different times of day.
