The Mask follows Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey), a mild-mannered, "nice guy" bank teller who is frequently walked all over by his peers, boss, and the city of Edge City. After a disastrous day, Stanley finds an ancient wooden mask in a garbage-strewn river.
While Carrey was already known for his physical comedy, The Mask provided the perfect vessel for his elastic face and frenetic energy. The character of Stanley Ipkiss, a timid bank clerk who transforms into a trickster god upon donning an ancient wooden mask, was originally a violent anti-hero in the Dark Horse comics.
